School Outpatient Therapy: Helping Students in Lynchburg
At Impact Living Counseling Virginia, we know many families face barriers to accessing therapy. Our School Outpatient Therapy Program brings counseling directly to students at school. This allows them to get the support they need without missing essential class time or dealing with transportation issues. Our counselors visit two alternative schools—Fort Hill and The Transitional Program—and six elementary schools: Sheffield, Linkhorne, Bass, Paul Munro, Heritage, and TC Miller.
We have a dedicated team of six full-time counselors—Alisha Parks, Carina Schiro, Jonathan Willis, Julie Palmer, and Pius Asamoah—who work with students facing the highest needs. Guardians are encouraged to participate in the process by setting goals and attending family sessions. Counselors coordinate care with school staff and other professionals to ensure the best outcomes for the children.
The Impact and Future of the Program
Last year, we supported 113 students in Lynchburg City Schools. Of those, 61% showed significant improvement, and 27% maintained steady progress. Only 8% experienced setbacks due to life situations beyond our control. School principals often praise our counselors for addressing core challenges. Their efforts are sometimes even more effective than other intensive services.
Looking ahead, Paul Munro Elementary requested our return due to our excellent past service. We also added Heritage Elementary to our program. While another school wanted us to expand, we chose to prioritize quality care rather than rapid growth. By focusing on strong support, we aim to help students thrive and make our community safer and happier.
