THRIVE Mentoring is a short-term, trauma-informed, and solution-focused program designed to help youth build resilience and develop protective factors that support recovery from Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Through this service, youth are connected with caring mentors who not only guide them in forming healthy habits but also help build positive relationships and strengthen essential social and communication skills.
Ultimately, the goal of THRIVE Mentoring is to empower both youth and their families by equipping them with the tools, skills, and natural supports necessary to succeed—not just during the course of services, but long after they have ended.
What Does THRIVE Stand For?
The THRIVE acronym highlights the core focus areas of our mentoring program. Within 90 days of enrollment, participants will work with their mentor to achieve growth in the following areas:
T – Together and Helping (Increasing Natural Supports)
Goal: Connect youth and their families with at least two natural supports within 90 days.
Natural supports—such as extended family, teachers, coaches, or faith communities—are powerful tools in building long-term resilience. Mentors assist youth in establishing or strengthening connections with these supports to increase stability and reduce isolation. This might mean reconnecting with a relative or trusted adult or joining a sports team or afterschool club.
R – Reach and Individual (Developing Social and Communication Skills)
Goal: Identify and strengthen two new social or communication skills.
THRIVE Mentors guide youth in developing skills to manage stress, communicate effectively, and respond to difficult situations in a healthy way. These learned skills will continue to be supported by family, school staff, or professional providers after services end. Skills include assertive communication and asking for help in positive ways.
V – Victories and Everyday (Creating Healthy Positive Habits)
Goal: Develop two consistent daily habits or routines over the course of services.
Mentors support youth and their caregivers in creating and sustaining simple, healthy routines that lead to big-picture success. These habits help create structure, build self-confidence, and promote personal growth. Habits could include establishing a new bedtime or screen-time routine and engaging in daily physical activity.
Length & Course of Treatment
THRIVE Mentoring operates as a short-term service, typically lasting 90 days, though families may extend it up to 180 days if additional support becomes necessary. Mentors generally provide services for approximately 5 hours each week.
Ultimately, the goal is to help youth and their families rapidly build the skills and support systems they need to sustain long-term success—even after services conclude.
To support this, Case Managers should consider requesting 5 hours of mentoring per week for 90 to 180 days, depending on both the youth’s needs and the specific requirements of their funding agency.
