Mental Health Skill Building Services (MHSS) is a short-term, goal-directed support program designed to help adults with severe mental illness (SMI) regain and maintain their independence and stability in the most appropriate, least restrictive environment. MHSS offers personalized, face-to-face activities and training to restore individuals to their highest level of functioning within their homes and communities.
What We Offer
The MHSS program provides structured, supportive services that focus on enhancing an individual’s ability to live independently and manage their mental health. We offer hands-on training and support in key areas, including:
- Functional skills for health and safety
- Activities of daily living (ADLs) such as personal hygiene, shopping, and money management
- Use of community resources like accessing public transportation and seeking employment
- Medication management assistance
- Health, nutrition, and physical condition monitoring, with goals to promote self-regulation
In addition, our team coordinates with other service providers to ensure individuals receive comprehensive support, including referrals for additional services as needed.
Treatment Goals
The MHSS program focuses on stabilizing adults in their homes and communities by promoting independence and functional recovery. Key treatment goals include:
- Stabilizing individuals within their local homes and communities
- Training and supporting functional and safety-related skills
- Developing daily living skills such as personal hygiene, money management, and grocery shopping
- Assisting with medication management and ensuring proper health monitoring
- Promoting self-regulation in health, nutrition, and physical well-being
Length & Course of Treatment
MHSS services typically last between 6 to 12 months, depending on the individual’s level of need. This time frame allows for focused intervention and progress toward community stability and independence. Services are available for adults 21 and older who meet the eligibility criteria, with special consideration for individuals aged 18-20.
To be eligible for MHSS services, individuals must:
- Have a diagnosis of a Severe Mental Illness (SMI)
- Be currently prescribed antidepressants and/or antipsychotics within the past 12 months
- Require assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
- Have a documented history of a higher level of care, including psychiatric hospitalization, community stabilization or crisis programs, or Temporary Detention Orders (TDOs)
