Play Therapy- Part 2

What happens during a play therapy session?

A play therapy session may look different depending on the child’s age, needs, and goals. Some sessions may involve structured activities chosen by the counselor. Others may allow the child to lead the play while the counselor observes, supports, and gently guides the therapeutic process.

Children may use:

  • Toys and figures
  • Art materials
  • Games
  • Books and stories
  • Sand trays
  • Puppets
  • Role play
  • Movement-based activities
  • Calming and grounding exercises

While it may look simple from the outside, the counselor is paying attention to themes, emotions, behavior patterns, and opportunities to help the child build new skills.

Play therapy can support parents and caregivers too

Play therapy is not only about supporting the child. Parents and caregivers are an important part of the process.

A counselor may help caregivers better understand what their child’s behavior may be communicating. They may also offer strategies for supporting emotional regulation, creating routines, responding to big feelings, setting healthy boundaries, and strengthening connection at home.

This can be especially helpful when parents feel unsure how to respond to tantrums, anxiety, defiance, withdrawal, or emotional overwhelm.

When caregivers feel more equipped, children often feel more secure.

Play therapy helps children build coping skills

One of the goals of play therapy is to help children develop tools they can use beyond the counseling session. These may include calming strategies, emotional vocabulary, problem-solving skills, confidence, communication tools, and healthier ways to manage frustration or fear.

Over time, children may become better able to:

  • Identify and name emotions
  • Express feelings safely
  • Calm their bodies when overwhelmed
  • Adjust to changes and transitions
  • Build confidence in social situations
  • Strengthen relationships with caregivers
  • Practice problem-solving
  • Manage anxiety, sadness, anger, or fear

These skills can support children at home, in school, and in relationships.

Play therapy gives children a safe place to be understood

Children need spaces where they feel safe, accepted, and understood. When a child is struggling emotionally or behaviorally, play therapy can provide that kind of space.

Through play, children can express what feels too big, confusing, or difficult to say out loud. With support from a trained counselor, they can begin to process their experiences, build healthy coping skills, and develop a stronger sense of confidence and emotional safety.

Impact Living Services provides counseling support for children and families

At Impact Living Services, we understand that children communicate in different ways. That is why our counseling services are designed to meet children where they are and support them in ways that make sense for their stage of development.

Whether a child is struggling with anxiety, school stress, grief, trauma, emotional outbursts, behavior concerns, or major life changes, counseling can help them feel supported and understood. In particular, play therapy gives children a way to work through challenges using the language they know best: play.
