Learning Life Skills Through Monopoly Live
For young adults preparing for independence, life can feel a lot like a game board. There are goals to reach, choices to make, obstacles to navigate, and moments when one decision can affect the next several steps.
That idea was at the heart of Impact Living Services’ Monopoly Live event at our Richmond site.
Monopoly Live was a hands-on life skills experience designed for youth in our Independent Living program. Instead of sitting through a traditional class or lecture, participants moved through interactive stations that help them practice real-world skills in a memorable and engaging way.
The goal is simple: help young people build confidence for life after foster care.
Life Skills That Matter
For many young adults, independence comes with a long list of responsibilities. Paying bills, applying for jobs, maintaining a home, making appointments, understanding insurance, managing money, and communicating with confidence are all part of daily life.
For youth aging out of foster care, these responsibilities can feel even more overwhelming without a consistent support system to lean on.
Monopoly Live helps break those responsibilities into practical, approachable steps. Each station gives youth a chance to learn, ask questions, and practice skills they will use in adulthood.
Topics may included:
- Home maintenance
- Health insurance
- School applications
- Healthy relationships
- Self-advocacy
- Everyday practical skills
These may seem like ordinary tasks, but they can make a major difference in helping a young person feel prepared, capable, and supported.
Learning by Doing
One of the most important parts of Monopoly Live was that it was interactive. Youth were not just told what to do; they got to participate, practice, and experience the lessons in real time.
That matters because life skills are best learned through doing.
A young adult can hear about budgeting, but practicing how to make choices with limited resources helps the lesson stick. They can be told why self-advocacy matters, but practicing how to speak up for themselves builds confidence. They can learn about home maintenance, but seeing common fixes and responsibilities makes independent living feel less intimidating.
Monopoly Live turns learning into action.
Building Confidence for the Future
Independent living is about more than having a place to stay. It is about learning how to manage life with stability, responsibility, and confidence.
Events like Monopoly Live give youth a safe environment to try, learn, and grow. They can ask questions without judgment and make mistakes without major consequences. They can discover that adulthood is not about knowing everything at once, but about learning how to keep moving forward.
That confidence can change the way a young person sees their future.
Community Makes It Possible
Monopoly Live also reflects something we believe deeply at Impact: young people aging out of foster care need community.

Supporting Youth Beyond Foster Care
Impact Living Services’ Independent Living program supports young adults ages 17–21 as they prepare for life after foster care. Through housing, life skills development, case management, mentorship, financial education, and individualized support, our team walks alongside youth as they build stability and independence.
Monopoly Live is one creative way we help make that support practical, engaging, and meaningful.
Because independence does not happen all at once. It is built one skill, one choice, and one step at a time.
