At Impact Living Services, we know that mobility and the confidence that comes with a driver’s license changes everything. That’s why our Car Incentive Program exists, to help youth take this crucial step toward self-sufficiency.
Independent Living at Impact
Youth in our Independent Living Program receive support to obtain their driver’s license, including resources for driver’s education and financial help when needed. Once they demonstrate responsibility and meet program goals, they can begin saving toward purchasing their own car. As they save, Impact matches their contributions, up to $3,500, making it possible to buy reliable transportation much sooner than they could on their own. But the program is about more than just a means to an end.
Recently, a youth told us about the game-changer that having a car gave her: being able to see family, have reliable transportation for her daughter’s appointments, and ultimately a sense of “being an adult”. She describes the joy of the freedom a car provides, but also the gift of structure and responsibility that car ownership added to her life. Having a car helped with budgeting, like learning to account for property taxes, gas, and emergency funds. Our team walks alongside each young person to teach these budgeting skills, insurance requirements, and the responsibilities of car ownership. This ensures that when they drive away, they’re not just holding keys, they’re prepared for the independence and responsibilities that come with them.
The impact is immediate and life-changing. A youth who once turned down a job because of transportation barriers can now commute to work. Someone who missed evening classes due to lack of a ride can now pursue education with confidence. Every mile driven is a mile toward stability, opportunity, and a brighter future.
