In a world where life can throw curveballs at any moment, few stories are as inspiring as that of Atrau, a youth aging out of foster care. From a challenging upbringing in foster care to becoming a successful, independent adult, his journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of never giving up.
Meet Atrau
Today, Atrau is a busy man. He works diligently at a warehouse and maintains a rigorous gym routine. “I’m always working,” he said, embodying the work ethic that has driven much of his success. His engagement to his high school sweetheart, whom he met in a unique twist of fate via Snapchat, is another testament to his commitment and perseverance. “My friend was trying to get with her, and I just jumped in there before he had the chance,” he recalled with a kind laugh.
His journey has been challenging. Entering foster care at the age of 12 and moving between multiple homes and schools, Atrau faced significant instability. “I never had any stability. I didn’t have any friends or family connections,” he shared. Despite these challenges, he found ways to excel. “I graduated high school at 17, early and on time, despite going to four different high schools,” he said proudly.
While the circumstances that led to his entering foster care and his time there were challenging, he was still able to glean valuable lessons. “I learned that it’s okay to be lonesome,” he said. This ability to find strength within himself proved crucial as he navigated the challenges of moving frequently and adapting to new environments.
“When I want something, I’m going to get it eventually”
In 2021, Atrau joined the Impact Living Services Independent Living program, which played a significant role in his journey. “I moved in like a month later, and it was fun,” he said, reflecting on his time there. The support and opportunities provided by the program helped him transition smoothly into adult life. “The apartment was very nice, and I liked all the people I met in Impact,” he noted.
One of the most impressive aspects of his story is his ability to save and plan for the future. By working hard and saving diligently, Atrau is about to buy a house at a young age. “I got the job I currently have and just saved up a bunch of money,” he explained. His entrepreneurial spirit and determination to achieve his goals are truly inspiring. “When I want something, I’m going to get it eventually,” he said, encapsulating his approach to life.
The support of his fiancée and her family also played a crucial role in this achievement. “It wasn’t just me. [Her] father did a lot of work, too,” he acknowledged. This collaborative effort and strong support system have been critical factors in his success and highlight a mentor’s role in a young person’s life.
Looking back on his journey, Atrau feels accomplished when he recalls the challenges he has overcome. “Foster care was one of the biggest challenges. I had to deal with a lot of instability,” he said. Yet, he turned these challenges into stepping stones, continuously pushing forward and striving for a better future.

Today, Atrau stands as a beacon of hope and resilience. His story is a powerful reminder that with determination, hard work, and a supportive community, overcoming even the most daunting obstacles is possible. His accomplishments, from graduating high school early to buying a house and building a stable life, are a testament to his incredible strength and unwavering spirit.
As he continues to build his future, Atrau inspires all who face adversity. His journey reminds us that no matter where we start, where we go, and what we achieve along the way, we truly define ourselves.
